DOYLESTOWN, Pa.- The Delaware Valley defense held Misericordia to just 132 total yards on the way to a 13-0 shutout victory over the Cougars Saturday afternoon.
Misericordia put together three first downs on the first drive but was stopped thanks to a 7-yard tackle for loss by
Dominic Valasquez and a sack by
Jacquez Mabin. The Aggies could not get out of their end during their first possession. A four-and-out by the DelVal defense got the ball back for the Aggies ten minutes in. Chunk plays by
Jack Fallon and
Dillon Shamanow set the Aggies up on the Misericordia one-yard line, where Fallon punched it in for a one-yard score. The play was challenged, but after review, the touchdown stood.
Brendan Hazell's extra-point attempt hit the upright, leaving the score at 6-0.
Following a turnover on downs by the Cougars, the Aggies found themselves at the MIS43 when
Louie Barrios IV was intercepted. Mabin then tackled Leo Hunsberger for a three-yard loss and broke up a pass on the next play, leading to an intentional grounding call that forced Misericordia to punt. Neither team could generate much offense before halftime.
DelVal got the ball to open the third quarter and the drive was highlighted by a 26 yard reception by
Alvaro Lora before having to punt. The Cougars marched down the field, including a 17 rush for quarterback Jacob Hunter. An incomplete pass in the endzone set up a fourth down. Going for it, Hunter rushed to the right but
Darius Nichols came up with the stop for the Aggies.
In the fourth quarter, a series of rushes by Fallon and two by
Elijah Williams moved DelVal to the MIS31. Barrios IV took the snap, and shuffled it back to
Nick Arcaroli, who found Lora in the end zone, burning a pair of defenders. Hazell successfully converted the extra point, extending DelVal's lead to 13-0.
Punts and turnovers on downs allowed the Aggies to run out the clock in victory formation. With this win at James Work Memorial Stadium, the Aggies improved to 3-1 (2-1 MAC), while the Cougars fell to 1-3 (0-3 MAC). DelVal will have a bye next week and returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, at Lebanon Valley College.
