DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - A goal by Marymount University in the 73rd minute broke the tie, leading to a 2-0 loss for Delaware Valley women's soccer on Saturday night.
The game began with both teams trading corners, and Jess Williamson had an early opportunity but hit the post. She followed up with another chance shortly after, but the ball was passed too far ahead. Marissa Rogers also attempted a shot on goal for DelVal, but it was saved by Grace Needham. In the 13th minute, the Saints took two shots, one of which was saved by Alexa DelGiudice just before it crossed the goal line. Neither team could establish an offensive rhythm, with the Aggies' next chance coming with just 2:30 remaining, but Rogers was called offsides.
Nicole Shisler replaced Viola Anderson to start the second half and was immediately tested by Nicole Alvarado, whose second shot hit the post. In the 48th minute, Sydney Dispoto found Williamson behind the defenders, but Needham made the save. Eight minutes later, Alvarado challenged Shisler again, forcing a fingertip save to deflect the ball wide. With 24 minutes left, Gillian Baker set up Williamson on the near side, but her shot narrowly missed the right post.
The Saints broke the deadlock when Breanna Harkins passed between two Aggie defenders, allowing Alvarado to score as she got the ball past Shisler, who had come out to challenge. Marymount added an insurance goal with 4:30 remaining, with Harkins scoring again, assisted by Alvarado.
Following the loss, the Aggies fell to 2-7 overall, while the Saints improved to 2-6-2. Delaware Valley will be back in action at home on Tuesday, October 1, hosting Drew University.
