Aggies Drop Early Lead in Conference Opener

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team held the FDU-Florham Devils to just eight points in set one going on to secure the second set before falling behind in the last three to drop the match 2-3 on Wednesday night.
 
DelVal capitalized on a huge run to start the set with kills from Emma Helverson, Madison Alexander, Zariah Prescott and Gretta Schneider gaining a 13-point lead before giving up their first point to the Devils. The Aggies offense continued to shine putting up another nine-consecutive points with the defensive duo of Helverson and Schneider recording four blocks together to keep the Devils scoreless. The Aggies gave up seven points before coming out with the convincing 25-8 win.
 
FDU gave up only two kills to Schneider and Grace Kane before getting their first point in the second set. The Aggies followed up with a 5-2 run with two more kills from Kane to build up a four-point lead, 7-3, before allowing a 10-2 run from the Devils for the lead change, 10-9. DelVal battled back tying the score twice before a kill from Schneider put the Aggies back on top, 12-11. The Aggies held a 13-11 advantage thanks to five kills from Helverson for the 25-22 second set win.
 
With just seven kills on 38 attack attempts, the Aggies struggled to gain the advantage over the Devils. DelVal managed to tie the score early three times, but remained in chase, trailing by as many as six before using a 13-6 run to even the score once again at 21 points apiece. The Devils offense came back strong with a 4-1 run to win the set 25-22.
 
The fourth set was anyone's game with the Devils maintaining a small edge over the Aggies before a kill from Schneider started a short 3-0 spurt to put the lead back in DelVal's hands, 9-6. DelVal remained ahead gaining as much as a four-point edge over FDU-Florham before the teams knotted the score at 16 apiece. A service ace from Helverson kept the game even at 23-23, but the Devils edged out the Aggies with a 5-3 run to secure the set, 28-26.
 
Despite leading in kills with five, the Devils managed to capitalize on the Aggies nine attack errors and two service errors to take the fifth and final set 15-12.
 
Helverson had a stellar day on defense with 8.5 total blocks tallying 11 block assists and three solo blocks. She ranked third in kills with 11 trailing behind leaders Kane and Schneider with 13 apiece.
 
The Aggies return to action this Saturday, Sep. 28 at the Bryn Athyn Trimatch facing Rutgers-Newark at noon before taking on the host Lions at 2 p.m.
