ASTON, Pa. – Gillian Baker and Jess Williamson propelled Delaware Valley women's soccer to a 3-2 victory over Neumann University on Wednesday afternoon.
Despite controlling the pace early on, Neumann struck first with Anna Poehlmann scoring on a breakaway in the eighth minute, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Viola Anderson. The Aggies responded ten minutes later when Williamson assisted Baker, who scored her third goal of the season to equalize. With six minutes remaining in the first half, Anderson made several crucial saves, keeping the Knights at bay as they pressed the DelVal defense.
The second half began with Jarleny Aguilar-Acuna taking the first shot, but it was blocked. Williamson received a yellow card for a foul, marking only the second of her college career. Soon after, the Aggies had a potential scoring opportunity that was called offside. However, Williamson quickly rebounded, evading a defender to score low and to the left, marking her fourth goal of the season and giving DelVal a 2-1 lead.
In the 61st minute, Sydney Dispoto also received a yellow card while trying to regain possession. Following this, Anderson charged out of the net to thwart a Neumann attack, resulting in a collision and a brief injury timeout as the game became increasingly physical.
In the 66th minute, Marissa Rogers delivered a cross that just evaded two Aggies in front of the goal. Moments later, Anderson made a spectacular diving save on a free kick, keeping DelVal in the lead.
Williamson had another opportunity at 70:39, but her shot was saved, and she sent the rebound high to the left. Six minutes later, Baker netted her second goal of the game on a free kick, finding the top right corner and extending the Aggies' lead to 3-1.
In the 80th minute, Neumann's Sierra Lester was awarded a penalty kick but shot over the goal. Jenna Green received a yellow card during the ensuing play. Although Anderson initially saved Hannah Dang's penalty kick, Dang converted the rebound, cutting the Aggie lead to 3-2 with just over a minute left.
DelVal snapped a three-game losing streak, improving to 2-6 overall. The Aggies return to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 28, facing Marymount University at 5:00 p.m.
