ABINGTON, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team came out on top in the first set defeating Penn State Abington 25-21, but the Nittany Lions came back in bold fashion winning three straight sets for the 3-1 victory.
The teams traded points through the first few rallies with Penn State Abington building up a small three-point lead before a kill from
Emma Helverson kicked off a 5-0 run by the Aggies to gain a two-point edge, 7-5. The Nittany Lions regained the lead leaving the Aggies to even the score five more times when
Grace Kane ended the back and forth with three consecutive kills to hand DelVal a 14-12 lead. The Nittany Lions remained in chase the rest of the set with DelVal capping it off with a 5-2 run for the 25-21 win.
In the second set, a huge eight point run for Penn State Abington set the tone leaving the Aggies in the chase only able to put up three points to the Nittany Lions 10 for the 18-4 lead. A small 4-0 run for the Aggies ensued with kills from Helverson, Kane and
Gretta Schneider, but it was too little too late with Penn State Abington holding DelVal to just nine points through the set.
The third set was a more even affair between the two teams with DelVal earning an early 6-3 lead. The Aggies maintained their lead until a short 3-1 run from Penn State Abington knotted things at nine apiece and kicked off another 4-1 run for the lead change. DelVal remained behind getting no closer than three thanks to a kill from
Monique Smith, but the Nittany Lions ultimately came out on top, 25-20.
The fourth set saw three early lead changes before a short 3-0 spurt put Penn State Abington on top 6-3. A service ace from Kane sealed the deal on a responding 3-0 run from the Aggies to even the score. Once again, ALa series of lead changes occurred before the Nittany Lions got a 5-0 run going to create a lead it wouldn't relinquish winning the set 25-19.
