DelVal Falls in Two Five-Set Thrillers

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team dropped matches to both Cedar Crest and Marywood in five sets each on Saturday.
 
MATCH ONE VS. CEDAR CREST (3-2 LOSS)
 The teams traded points in the first set with the Aggies unable to gain more than a three-point edge over Cedar Crest. The Falcons tied the score at 11-11when a series of errors started DelVal off on five-point run for the largest lead of the set, 16-11. Cedar Crest answered back with a 12-2 run and never looked back taking set one 26-24.
 
The Aggies owned the next two sets starting the second with an early lead off errors from the Falcons. Cedar Crest wouldn't get closer than four points of the lead over the next rallies until a 6-1 run cut the deficit to one. DelVal offense stepped up with a kill from Victoria Tucker starting off a 10-3 run to put the Aggies ahead 22-15. Cedar Crest held the 9-4 edge through the rest of the set but couldn't come back with the Aggies securing the final two points of the set for the 26-24 win.
 
DelVal started the third set in similar fashion with an early 4-0 lead. The Aggies maintained the edge with the teams trading points until a 6-0 run from the Falcons to cut DelVal's lead to two, 16-14. A kill from Grace Kane ensued to begin a huge 9-0 run to end the set in favor of the Aggies, 25-14. Cedar Crest finished out the final two sets with scores of 25-21 and 16-14 for the 3-2 win.

MATCH TWO VS. MARYWOOD (3-2 LOSS)
The Aggies struggled offensively in the first two sets falling to Marywood 25-17 in set one and 26-24 in set two. DelVal found its groove in the third set pulling ahead by a 5-1 lead. The Aggies maintained the lead with Marywood unable to come closer than five until a setting error and attack error allowed Marywood to cut the deficit to four, 16-12. The Pacers went on to close the gap to two with a service ace, 16-14. DelVal used a 4-1 run to regain a five-point lead before the Pacers cut the deficit back down to three, 20-17. DelVal finished the set on a 5-3 run to take a 25-20 victory over Marywood.
 
DelVal started off strong in the fourth set with a seven-goal run highlighted by four service aces from Samantha Wilton. A Grace Kane service ace paired with kills from Emma Helverson and Victoria Tucker put the Aggies ahead by 11, 17-6. DelVal followed it up with a four-point run to take a 21-6 lead. The Aggies held the Pacers to just seven more points putting up four of their own for the 25-13 victory. DelVal held the lead through the start of the final set until a 10-1 run from the Pacers handed them the 15-10 win in the set for the 3-2 match victory.

The Aggies return to action on Tuesday, Sep. 3 at Lancaster Bible for a 7 p.m. matchup.
