DOYLESTOWN, PA.- The Delaware Valley baseball team hosted the Monarchs of King's College in a MAC Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 6th. The Aggies came into this match-up with a record of 9-11, coming off a MAC conference three-game series last weekend against Stevens, where DelVal won one of the three games. King's entered the day with a record of 5-14 coming off of a series loss to nationally ranked Misericordia. King's would go on to take both games from Delaware Valley and sweep the doubleheader by a score of 3-1 and 4-1.
The starting pitcher for Delaware Valley in game number one was Derek Cannon.
King's would capitalize on two errors made by the Delaware Valley defense to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning. The Aggies would get a runner-in-scoring position in the bottom half of the inning as Johnathan Drews would hit a single through the right side and then advance on a wild pitch. However, the offense wasn't able to capitalize and the score remained 1-0.
Andrew Schneider and Liam Martin would notch base hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning to give DelVal runners on the corners. The Aggies would then hit into an inning-ending double play soon after to keep the score the same.
The Delaware Valley and King's pitching and defense trade back five consecutive 1-2-3 innings to keep the score 1-0 through six and a half innings.
In the bottom of the 6th, DelVal would immediately get a runner in scoring position as James Miskanic would hit a single through the left side then would advance on a wild pitch. Once again the offense was not able to produce as King's would get out of the jam and hold onto the 1-0 lead going into the final inning.
The Monarchs would get some much-needed insurance runs in the top of the 7th when they scored two runs off three hits, a walk, and a hit by pitch to take a 3-0 lead. The Aggies would cut the deficit in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single from James Miskanic, but it wasn't enough as King's would take game one by a score of 3-1.
The starting pitcher for Delaware Valley in game number two was Patrick Flynn. King's would take a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning with an RBI single and an RBI ground out.
Both team's pitching and defense would take over as neither team would score another run through the next four innings as King's would still lead 2-0 through five innings.
Dalton Moore would replace Flynn on the mound in relief in the top of the 6th inning. Delaware Valley would start the bottom half of the inning off with Johnathan Drews advancing on a hit-by pitch, followed by a double from Hank Bielen. After two outs with both runners in scoring position, a throwing error would allow DelVal to cut the deficit to 2-1.
After a scoreless 7th inning of play, King's would extend their lead 4-1 in the top of the 8th inning with an RBI triple.
The Aggies offense was not able to make a comeback and the Monarchs would earn a sweep.
