DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley baseball team overcame a four-run deficit after the first inning of game one against Misericordia to take a single run lead and a three-run deficit in game two to tie in up in the seventh inning but fell short dropping game one 18-6 and game two 8-3.
The Cougars opened strong with five runs in the first inning off two hits and two errors. The Aggies scored just one run in the bottom of the inning with
Lucas Santise leading off and singling to right field. He was advanced to second by
Hank Bielen off a single to left field and brought home with a single from
Gavin Migliori to right field.
The Cougars scoring slowed in the top of the second recording three outs on just four batters to put the Aggies back on offense where they plated four runs to even the score, 5-5.
Tyler Mellinger singled up the middle and advanced to second with a walk from
Nathan Fisher. Santise stepped back up to the plate drawing the walk to load the bases.
Liam Martin ripped a hit to the short stop who fumbled the ball to make way for both Mellinger and Fisher to return home and cut the deficit to two, 5-3.
Hank Bielen and
Jonathan Drews batted back-to-back singles scoring both Santise and Martin to tie the game, 6-6.
Evan Scally was hit by a pitch to lead off the third and advanced to third off a double down the line from Fisher. Santise ripped a sacrifice fly to center field to score Scally for the Aggies sixth and final run of the game. Misericorida went on to plate nine more hits through the remaining innings for the 18-6 victory.
Ethan Saxe started on the mound for the Aggies in game two. DelVal's defense went three-for-three in the first two innings giving up just one hit in the third before recording another three outs on three batters in the fourth.
Samuele Mattia walked to start the bottom of the fourth and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Martin. Bielen scored Mattia with a single to right center field to give DelVal the 1-0 lead. The Aggies held onto the lead until the top of the sixth with the Cougars netting two runs for the lead.
Misericordia extended its lead to 3-1 off two hits in the top of the seventh. Migliori singled in the bottom of the second and advanced to second with a single from
Blake Ramos. A double from Fisher to right center field scored them both to tie the game at 3-3. The Cougars put up five runs in the final inning for the 8-3 win.
Ethan Saxe pitched 8.2 innings for the Aggies in game two with two strikeouts.
DelVal returns to action this Wednesday, Apr. 24 at Alvernia for a single nine-inning game starting at 3:30 p.m.
