Aggies Offense Struggles in Loss to Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's lacrosse team hit the road to visit the Cougars of Misericordia for a Wednesday night MAC Freedom showdown. The Aggies fell behind quick and struggled to recover, eventually dropping the contest 21-6.

Misericordia was the first to strike with three unanswered goals to kick off the first four minutes of the first quarter. Just under the 11-minute mark, Viola Anderson scooped up the ground ball off the turnover to put DelVal back in possession and set up Ashley Birmingham for the unassisted goal to cut the deficit to two, 3-1.

The Cougars offense picked back up the momentum with five straight goals to extend their lead to seven, 7-1, with Birmingham there to end the bleeding yet again at the 1:06 mark, this time the play set up thanks to a ground ball from Alyssa Rudd. Misericordia capitalized off a turnover in the final second getting past goalie Emily Drake to take a 9-2 lead into the second quarter.

The Aggies went on to trail by eight to after the Cougars converted right off the opening draw, 8-2, but Kyra McKeegan controlled the draw off the goal and found the stick of Susan Rawding for the goal to make it a five-point game yet again, 8-3. Misericordia put up six more goals in the frame while Birmingham added one for the Aggies off a free position shot to leave DelVal trailing by 10, 14-4, heading into the second half.

Scoring slowed in the final 30 minutes of the game for the Aggies contributing just two goals while giving up seven to the Cougars across the final two frames. Birmingham scored the lone goal of the third quarter thanks again to Rudd who regained possession for the Aggies with the ground ball. In the fourth quarter, Anderson forced the turnover to put McKeegan out front of the net for the Aggies' sixth and final goal of the game.

Birmingham led the Aggies in scoring with four goals while McKeegan held the only assist of the game. Birmingham also led in draw controls with three in the game while Samantha Charles led in ground balls with five. Drake recorded all 60 minutes in the net and made eight saves.

DelVal returns to action at home on Robert A. Lipinski Field this Saturday, Apr. 13 when they host Lebanon Valley at 12 p.m. Prior to the opening draw, the Aggies will take time to honor their five seniors in a pre-game ceremony.
