Langhorne, Pa. - Delaware Valley men's lacrosse defeated Cairn University 14-5 on Wednesday night and saw Chris Marren break the program record for goals in a single game.
The Aggies fired six shots before they found the back of the net in the first 15 minutes. Luke Kelchner tallied his first of the season with 4:25 remaining. After a Jim Murphy save, Jack Sprinkle connected with Marren to put DelVal up 2-0 just before time expired.
Cairn won the faceoff to begin the second frame and scored 43 seconds in. A crosschecking penalty on Cairn put the Aggies a man up and Sprinkle capitalized on the opportunity at 8:43, one second before the penalty expired. 20 seconds later, Kieran Schneider got another on the board, assisted by Aidan Purcell. The Highlanders turned the ball over and was scooped up by Ryan Lindberg. The turnover led to another Aggie goal by Schneider, assisted by Sprinkle. Just seven seconds after the goal, Cairn scored one of their own, but DelVal and Marren answered a minute later, Aggies up 6-2. Cairn netted a final tally before time expired.
In the third quarter, five minutes in, the Aggies turned the ball over leading to a Highlander goal. After a Cairn-won faceoff, they turned the ball over and after two shots, Marren buried the third to go ahead 7-4. With 18 seconds to go, Marren scored his fourth goal of the game on a rebound opportunity.
Marren found Sprinkle to the right of the net to beat the goal low left to go ahead 9-5 a minute into the final quarter. On a failed clear attempt, Sprinkle caused a turnover leading Marren to find Savering who beat the goalie at 10:40, and just over a minute later, Marren notched his fifth of the game off another Cairn turnover making the score 11-5. With 3:50 left in the game, Marren scored his seventh goal of the game which broke the Delaware Valley record Previously held by Dylan Brasch, he scored his 8th to seal a 15-5 victory.
With the win, the Aggies improve to 2-0 in the young 2024 season and are set to visit Albright College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
