SELINSGROVE, Pa. –
Kamal Johnson led the Delaware Valley men's basketball team to a 65-62 victory over Susquehanna on Friday night, marking their fourth win of the season.
Kamal Johnson responded to a Riverhawks three-pointer to start the game, helping DelVal build an early 14-9 lead. However, Susquehanna went on an 11-0 run over the next five minutes, taking a 20-14 lead with seven minutes remaining in the first half.
Zoelin Pair and
Kamal Johnson each added layups, and a steal by
Miles Demby led to a jumper by
Mike Herrin, tying the game at 20. With 2:43 left before the break,
Reggie Washington stole the ball and sent
Caleb Johnson down the court to hit a three-pointer. Washington then sank a pair of free throws, and Herrin hit a three just before the buzzer, sending the Aggies into halftime with a 32-27 lead. DelVal scored 18 points off Riverhawk turnovers in the first 20 minutes, closing the half on an 11-2 run.
In the second half, layups by Washington and Herrin gave the Aggies a four-point lead, but Susquehanna responded with free throws and a layup to tie the game four minutes in. The Riverhawks extended their run to 9-2, but
Kamal Johnson's layup narrowed the gap, bringing DelVal to within 41-40. Susquehanna then held the Aggies scoreless for the next five minutes, but Johnson ended the drought with a three-point play, converting an and-one opportunity at the line. The Riverhawks answered with four consecutive free throws, but
Kamal Johnson and
Caleb Johnson each sank a three-pointer to keep DelVal close.
With five minutes remaining,
Mike Herrin tied the game at 52. The game then saw back-and-forth action, featuring three-pointers from Herrin and Washington. With one minute left, Coach Kaba called a timeout with the Aggies leading 62-60. After a turnover by Susquehanna,
Kamal Johnson added a layup to extend the lead to four. The Riverhawks had one last chance to tie the game with a three-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot missed.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 4-4 overall, snapping a two-game losing streak. They return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at home against McDaniel College at 7:00 p.m.
