HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. –
Mike Herrin's 35 points propelled the Aggies to a thrilling 77-75 comeback victory over Centenary University on Wednesday afternoon.
The Cyclones came out strong, opening the game with a 7-0 run. Herrin answered for the Aggies, scoring a pair of jumpers over the next three minutes. However, DelVal struggled with their outside shooting, missing three three-point attempts as Centenary built a 16-4 lead.
Both teams began to pick up the pace, exchanging fast breaks and scoring opportunities.
Kamal Johnson and
Jordan Gombs contributed layups in an effort to close the gap. While both teams struggled with turnovers, the Cyclones capitalized, outscoring the Aggies 11-2 off turnovers in the first half.
Herrin's scoring surge helped keep the Aggies in the game. He hit a three-pointer and a layup in the final minutes, but the Aggies still found themselves down 41-27 at the break. Herrin finished the first half with 12 points, while K. Johnson added four assists. Darnelle Forrest led all scorers with 19 points for Centenary, shooting 9-12 from the field.
The second half began with a foul on
Reggie Washington, who converted both free throws to cut the deficit. Centenary answered with a 7-0 run, but the Aggies quickly responded with a run of their own, highlighted by four points from Herrin and
Zoelin Pair's first points of the afternoon.
With 15 minutes remaining, both teams traded layups, but Herrin's 20th point kept the Aggies within striking distance, still down by ten. At the 12:42 mark, Herrin sank another three-pointer, and Pair followed with an offensive rebound and put-back layup, narrowing the Cyclones' lead to just four. However, a pair of turnovers allowed Centenary to regain their advantage.
With six minutes left, Herrin and
Caleb Johnson each nailed a three-pointer to bring the Aggies within three. Then, with 2:45 remaining, Washington's layup gave DelVal their first lead of the game at 73-72.
After a timeout with 27 seconds remaining,
Zoelin Pair stole the ball, and head coach Kaba called another timeout with the score tied at 75. Following the break, Gombs converted a layup off a broken play to put the Aggies up 77-75 with just four seconds left. Centenary's final three-point attempt missed, securing the Aggies' third win of the season.
With the victory, DelVal improves to 3-2 on the season. The Aggies will return to action on the road at Immaculata on Wednesday, Dec. 4, with a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
