Birmingham Sinks the Penalty Stroke to Defeat Drew

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley field hockey team and the Drew Rangers remained scoreless through 54 minutes of play until a penalty stroke put Ashley Birmingham at the line for the goal put the Aggies in the lead, defeating Drew 1-0 at home.

DelVal's defense was put to the test early with both Olivia Rexrode and Birmingham recording defensive saves to prevent the Rangers from getting on the board. The momentum shifted in favor of the Aggies with four corners in the final two minutes leaving Birmingham with two shots placing one wide and one on goal.

The Aggies offense held the advantage through the second quarter firing off two shots, landing one on goal. The Rangers struggled to break through into the DelVal backfield unable to get off any shots in the frame.

Back-to-back penalty corners in the 53rd minute saw one shot for the Aggies from Paige Sammons but set DelVal up to draw the foul and earn a penalty stroke attempt in the 54th minute. Birmingham stepped up to the line, lifting the ball to the left and past the goalie to break the scoring drought and hand the Aggies a 1-0 win.

DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Oct. 12 when they travel to Arcadia for their first MAC Freedom contest at 1 p.m.
