Aggies Comeback Falls Short, Drops Match to Cairn in Five

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team went into set two 0-1 and mounted a second and third set comeback to hold the 2-1 advantage over Cairn, but the Highlanders pulled through winning sets four and five to defeat the Aggies 3-2.

The Highlanders came out hot to start with an early seven-point lead over the Aggies in the first set, 8-1. DelVal cut the deficit to five before Cairn mounted another one to take a 10-point lead, 16-6. Two attack errors shifted momentum in favor of the Aggies for a small 5-1 run to bring the deficit back down to single-digits, 18-12. Cairn held the 7-3 edge through the rest of the set for the win, 25-15.

Emma Helverson knocked down the kill to start the second set strong and kick off a 16-3 run for the Aggies. The Highlanders cut the deficit down to 10, 17-7, but a bad set helped the Aggies with a 4-0 run to build up the lead, 21-7. Cairn remained within eight until a Gretta Schneider kill ended the set for the Aggies, 25-16.

The third set saw two lead changes before the Highlanders kept a slight edge building up a small three-point lead, 11-8. Kills from Helverson and Cassandra Gloster followed to make it a one-point game. DelVal remained in chase eventually falling behind by four, 17-13, before using a short 3-0 run to bring the deficit back to one. A kill from Victoria Tucker set off a 6-1 run to finally put the Aggies ahead, 23-21. A kill from Helverson and attack error on Cairn ended the set in favor of the Aggies, 25-23.

The Aggies held the lead the majority of the fourth set building up an advantage of five points, 15-10. The Highlanders began to chip away at the lead tying things up at 19 apiece. Cairn held the 6-3 advantage to end the set, 25-23.

Helverson and Schneider put DelVal ahead by two to start the fifth set, 3-1. The lead changed hands twice before the Highlanders mounted a 7-0 run to win the set, 15-9.
