DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley men's soccer team hosted Valley Forge in its home opener netting two goals in the first half and never looking back to secure the first win of the 2023 season. The victory also marks the first for first-year head coach Shaq Stephenson.
The Aggies picked up possession in the 10
th minute with the backfield working the ball out of traffic and up the sideline where
Roy Hevener awaited to collect the pass from 30 yards out moving in toward the center and connecting with
Pierce Marks inside the box. Marks proceeded with the one-touch shot right past the Valley Forge goalkeeper and into the wide-open net to give the Aggies an early 1-0 advantage.
The possession remained mostly with Delaware Valley through the next 20 minutes with the Aggies taking back-to-back corner kicks in the 27
th minute, both resulting in good looks at the goal from
Nate Reed and
Bennett Nordhoff.
Valley Forge defense shifted the possession back in its favor clearing the ball out to the Aggies backfield where it found keeper
Liam Morris at the top of the circle. In an effort to get back on the attack, Morris booted a long ball downfield to
Adonis Gaspard. Gaspard collected the ball right in the center at the top of the center quick spinning out to his left to beat the Valley Forge defender for the breakaway shot on the cage to make it a 2-0 game.
The victory moves Delaware Valley to 1-1 on the season while Valley Forge drops to 1-2. The Aggies return to action on Monday, Sept. 11 at William Patterson University for a 6 p.m. kickoff before coming back to Doylestown on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to host Bryn Athyn at 4 p.m.
