Collegeville, Pa. - The Delaware Valley University women's soccer team dropped the season opener to Ursinus College 2-0 on Friday afternoon. Viola Anderson snagged a career-high 17 saves despite taking a hard hit early in the second half.
The Aggies controlled the game's first five minutes, including three corner kicks. Ursinus took control and hemmed DelVal back in their defensive end. At the 15-minute mark, the Aggies turned the ball over in their zone sending Adriana Careless in alone to beat Anderson over her left shoulder. Ciara Rago notched the assist as the Bears took a 1-0 advantage. Ursinus controlled the remainder of the half, sending 11 shots, with Anderson making five saves. Â
Anderson was tested again early in the second half, making a save and then securing the loose ball. Ursinus kept the pressure on and Careless netted her second goal of the game, deflecting off the goalie and up into the corner of the net two and a half minutes into the half. Anderson made multiple diving saves keeping the Aggies within two. Gillian Baker threw a shot on goal answered by goalkeeper Maddie Nau, her third save of the game with 32 minutes left. In the 71st minute, Savannah Rennix threatened, sailing a shot over the top of the net from 20 yards out. Â
Following the loss, the Aggies fall to 0-1-0 and hit the field tomorrow, Saturday, September 2nd, as they host Gwynned Mercy University for their 2023 home opener at Robert A, Lipinski Field at noon. Ursinus improves to 1-0-0 and will host Stevenson University on Sunday, September 3rd. Â
