WILLIAMSPORT (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team fell into a 2-0 hole, climbed back, but ultimately saw a 4-2 decision slip away as host Lycoming College came away with a 4-2 win in a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom bout on Tuesday afternoon.
The loss dropped the Aggies to 13-21 overall and 7-14 in league play while the Warriors improved to 12-22 and 9-14.
In the bottom of the first, Lycoming loaded the bases thanks to an error and a pair of walks. Two batters later, Nick Hoheb legged out an infield single to score a pair of unearned runs and give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
DelVal was held to two hits and five base runners over the next six innings as Lycoming maintained the two-run advantage into the eighth. The Aggies finally broke through when Hank Bielen and Jonathan Drews occupied second and third, and a throwing by the pitcher on a ball hit by Garrett Zimmerman brought them both home to tie the game.
However, in the bottom of the eighth, the Warriors strung together a two-out rally that culminated in a two-run single off the bat of Josh Bottger to put Lycoming back on top, 4-2.
The Aggies got one runner on in the ninth, but a fly out and a ground out ended the game and gave the home team the victory.
Ethan Saxe started the game on the mound for DelVal and struck out six while allowing four hits and two unearned runs with three walks. Dalton Moore suffered the loss after going 3.2 innings and allowing two runs, one earned. Five different Aggies registered a hit, and Sean Gledhill was on-base three times.
Zac Zaller started for the Warriors and went seven innings with three this and no runs allowed with three K's. Jack Schilling earned the win with two innings of work and two runs against.
The Aggies will wrap-up the regular season with a three-game series against King's.
