DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – An early deficit proved to be no challenge for the Delaware Valley men's basketball team who defeated the visiting Penn State Abington Nittany Lions 81-60 on Wednesday night.
Penn State got off to a hot start with an immediate 7-0 run through the first 1:35. Collin MacAdams converted the layup to break the Aggies scoring streak and started DelVal on a 7-4 run highlighted by a
Rasheem Dearry three-pointer to cut the deficit to four, 11-7. The Nittany Lions built back up the lead with the 4-2 advantage over a short period when
Godly Marc hit the three to end the run and give the Aggies their smallest deficit yet, 15-12, with 13:13 to play in the half.
DelVal held a 9-6 advantage over PSU through the next four minutes and 34 seconds to tie the game for the first time, 21-21, with 8:33 remaining in the half. The Aggies continued on a 7-2 run with
Tyriq Toney-Bailey sinking the three to put DelVal ahead by five, 28-23, and force a Nittany Lions timeout with 4:54 on the clock.
Penn State put together a 9-4 performance over the next four minutes to tie it back up, 32-32, but a
Goddy Marc layup quickly put the Aggies back in the lead, 34-37. A long ball from the Nittany Lions with 30 seconds on the clock gave them the single-point advantage, 35-34, headed into the half.
DelVal came out hot with a 9-3 run with an
Antonio Redding three-pointer to regain a five-point lead, 43-38. The Aggies further extended their lead with Redding stepping up to the line shooting 3-of-3 for the six-point advantage, 46-40. The threes continued to fall with Redding and Toney-Bailey both converting to put the Aggies ahead by 12, 52-40.
The teams traded points through the halfway mark with the Nittany Lions holding a slight 10-8 edge to bring the deficit down to 10, 60-50. A 12-2 run from the Aggies ensued with back-to-back Toney-Bailey threes to give DelVal its largest lead yet, 72-52, with under five minutes left in the game. Penn State tried to mount a comeback but five unanswered points from
Goddy Marc kept DelVal ahead by 10, 77-57. The Aggies held the 4-3 advantage capped off with a Alex Hilliard dunk for the 81-60 win.
Dearry led the scoring for the Aggies with 17 points off 6-of-13 shooting including 1-of-4 from deep and a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe. Toney-Bailey and
Goddy Marc both ended the night in double-figures with 12 and 14 points, respectively.
Jordan Gombs led the battle at the boards with six rebounds.
DelVal returns to action this Saturday, Dec. 9 at home against Washington College (Md.) in a 1 p.m. tipoff.
