Gwynedd Valley, Pa. - Jordan Gombs notched his first career double-double (14 pts, 10 reb) on Delaware Valley's way to a 76-68 victory over Gwynedd Mercy Tuesday night.
The Griffins wasted no time, winning the jump ball and sinking a layup seconds into the game. Colin MacAdams and Godly Marc scored back-to-back three balls to get the Aggies on the board. The fast tempo continued when Tyriq Toney-Bailey snagged a defensive rebound and sent Gombs and Goddy Marc the other way who found Zoelin Pair for a nice layup at 13:04. Gombs and Justin Ramsey-Blythe layups built up a 25-17 Aggie lead before a few misses and turnovers let Gwynedd tie the score at 25 with seven minutes to go. DelVal followed with a 7-0 run two minutes later, forcing the Griffins coach to call a timeout. Back-to-back steals and layups for Ramsey-Blythe and Goddy Marc boosted the advantage to 13 points before Gwynedd drained a bucket with under three minutes in the first half. Rasheem Dearry heaved up a shot well beyond half-court and drained it, sending the Aggies to the locker room up by ten, 44-34.
Gombs sank an up-and-in layup and was sent to the line for an and-one to open the second half. The Griffins answered by going on a 9-0 run that spanned over three minutes and found themselves within four points of the Aggies. DelVal responded with a 7-1 run of their own to build back a ten-point lead with 12 minutes remaining. Gombs spun off a defender and put in a layup with Griffins beginning to struggle offensively going 1-20 from the floor keeping DelVal ahead 63-50. Gwynedd Mercy inched back, getting to within four points at the two-minute mark before MacAdams put in a layup and was fouled, sinking his and-one. In the final minute, Gombs grabbed his tenth rebound to earn his first career double-double with the Aggies going on to cap a 76-68 victory.
Delaware Valley improves to 3-2 overall and will next hit the court after Thanksgiving on Saturday, Dec. 2 at York College.
