JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team win three-straight sets in the match against New Jersey City to snap a four-game skid dating back to Oct. 10. The victory moves the Aggies to 10-11 on the season.
Despite giving up the first two points of the first set, the Aggies quickly came from behind to take a single-point lead, 3-2, thanks to a service ace from
Olivia Deffendall and a kill from
Grace Kane. DelVal went on to hold a 7-3 edge over the Gothic Knights to create a four-point lead, 9-5. New Jersey City cut the deficit down to three before committing an attack error to start the Aggies on a 5-0 run for the 15-7 lead. With DelVal ahead 20-11, the Gothic Knights mounted a 4-0 attack to make it a five-point game, 20-15. The Aggies held onto the narrow 5-4 advantage through the rest of the set to take it 25-19.
Offensive momentum from Kane paced the Aggies to an early 5-2 lead over New Jersey City to start the second set. A quick three points for the Gothic Knights tied the score with a response from Kane putting the Aggies back in the lead, 7-5. Another quick three points put New Jersey City ahead 8-7, but errors quickly lost them the lead putting DelVal back ahead 9-8. The lead changed in favor of the Gothic Knights once more before a solid 10-2 run from the Aggies put them ahead by seven, 19-12. DelVal kept pace holding the 6-3 edge through the remainder of the set to win it 25-15.
The Gothic Knights held the advantage to start the third set taking a 5-3 lead over the Aggies. DelVal was quick to respond with an
Emma Helverson kill starting the squad on a 6-0 run for the four-point lead, 9-5. New Jersey City struggled to get a run moving with the Aggies continuing to expand their lead to make it a six-point game, 18-12. A 5-1 run from the Gothic Knights closed the gap to two, 19-17, but DelVal held the 6-3 advantage through the end of the set to win it 25-20.
Deffendall and Kane led the defense for DelVal with seven kills apiece. The Aggies totaled 10 service aces in the contest with
Gretta Schneider,
Hannah Brennan, Deffendall and Kane recording two each. Schneider led the defense with 10 digs.
The Aggies return to action this Tuesday, Oct. 24 at home in James Work Gymnasium against DeSales at 7 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink for the Dig Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
