DOYLESTOWN, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team put up a tough fight, but failed to outscore Lebanon Valley falling to the Dutchmen 0-3 on Wednesday night.
Errors from the Dutchmen put the Aggies ahead a quick 2-0 with Lebanon Valley holding the 3-1 edge to tie the score, 3-3. An
Emma Helverson service ace for DelVal maintained its lead, 4-3. The teams went on to tie seven more times with a
Grace Kane kill making it a 16-16 game. The Dutchmen responded with their largest run of the set, 7-0, to make it a 23-16 game. A service ace and kill from Kane stopped the run and put up two-straight for the Aggies to cut the deficit to five, 23-18. Lebanon Valley put up the final two points to end the set, 25-18.
A big 6-0 run for the Aggies with kills from Kane and a service ace from
Olivia Deffendall gave them an early 7-2 advantage over the Dutchmen to start the second set. Lebanon Valley cut the deficit to three when a Deffendall kill started DelVal off on a 4-0 run to take the 11-4 lead. The teams continued to trade points with Lebanon Valley brining the deficit down to six before a mounting a 5-0 run to make it a single-point game, 14-13. Attack errors from Deffendall allowed the Dutchmen to creep up on the lead, but successful kills from the senior helped DelVal to maintain a narrow lead, 16-15. The teams tied the score three times before a 7-1 run from the Dutchmen ended the set in their favor, 25-19.
The DelVal attack started strong with a 5-2 advantage over Lebanon Valley. The Dutchmen were quick to respond with a 5-0 run to take the 7-5 lead. The Aggies continued to kept the score within a single-points' reach, but a 6-0 run from Lebanon Valley created a seven-point deficit, 14-7. The Dutchmen tried to run away with a bigger lead but a kill from Helverson paired with an attack error kept it to a seven-point game, 18-11. Lebanon Valley held the 7-4 edge over the Aggies to end the set, 25-15, and win the match.
Kane (7), Deffendall (6) and
Gretta Schneider (3) led the Aggies offense in kills. Helverson led from the back court with three service aces. The junior also stepped up in front of the net with a team-high four blocks. Schneider led on defense with eight digs.
The Aggies are back in action this Saturday, Oct. 21 at New Jersey City University for a noon matchup.
