Women’s Volleyball Second Set Win Not Enough, Falls to King’s on the Road

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Delaware Valley women's volleyball team dropped the first set before rallying to make it an even 1-1, but couldn't pull through dropping the next two to fall to King's 3-1.
 
The Aggies record for the season drops to 9-7 with a now 1-3 mark in MAC Freedom play. King's improves to 11-7 and 1-3 in the conference.
 
The beginning of the first set was an even affair until a 4-0 run from the Monarchs put them ahead 11-6. The teams traded a few more points before King's set up for another 4-0 spurt to take an eight-point advantage. 17-9. DelVal's offense was slow moving until a Grace Kane kill started the Aggies on a 6-0 run to bring the deficit down to two-points, 20-18. The Monarchs continued to maintain their lead with a Hannah Brennan service ace making it a single-point game, 23-22. King's held the 2-1 edge to take the set 25-23.
 
The Aggies offense came out strong holding a lead through the 8-6 mark when attack errors got the best of the them allowing King's to tie it up, 8-8. Kills from Kane and Emma Helverson helped DelVal to maintain its edge with a 3-0 run to make it an 11-8 game. Quickly King's crept back into it with the 5-2 advantage to tie the score 13-13. The Monarchs tied the game twice more before a short 2-0 spurt put them in the lead over the Aggies, 19-18. DelVal responded with a 5-1 run comprised of three kills to take a three-point advantage, 23-20. Three straight from King's tied it up, but two-straight kills from Helverson and Olivia Deffendall gave the Aggies the set, 25-23.
 
The King's offense came out strong in the third set jumping out to a 10-3 edge over the Aggies. A 4-1 run from DelVal closed the gap to four, 11-7, but King's built the lead back up to half. 14-7. The Aggies held a slight 6-4 edge to bring the deficit down to five, 18-13. The Monarchs held the 7-4 advantage, comprised of four unanswered points to end the set 25-17.
 
DelVal let up the first point to begin the fourth but used a 5-3 run highlighted by four kills to take a single-point lead, 5-4. The lead changed hands six more times before the teams knotted the score at 17 apiece. The Monarchs came out of the tie with a 4-0 run to take a 21-17 lead over the Aggies with DelVal only coming within one-point two more times before back-to-back kills from Kane and Helverson eventually tied it at 24-24. King's put up two unanswered to win the final set, 26-24.
 
Three Aggies ended the night with double-digit kills. Deffendall led the charge with 14 followed by Kane and Gretta Schneider with 11 and 10, respectively. Monique Smith and Brennan were the teams' assist leaders with 23 and 17, respectively. Both Kane and Schneider led from back court with three service aces apiece. Kane also led defensively with 17 digs in the game.
 
The Aggies are back in action this Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. when they return home to James Work Gymnasium to take on Alvernia.
