DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – Visiting DeSales University led wire-to-wire to earn a 70-61 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory over the Delaware Valley University men's basketball team on Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in league play while the Aggies dropped to 7-8 and 2-4.
DeSales got out to an 11-0 lead to start the game, but DelVal countered with a 9-2 run of its own to pull within four, 13-9, after 7:04 of play.
The Bulldogs scored the next seven points to regain their double-digit lead. The Aggies would get back to within six, but DeSales always had a response to maintain the double-digit advantage. In the waning seconds of the half, Godly Marc tipped an attempted inbounds pass from the Bulldogs to Jordan Gombs who heaved up a half-court shot at the buzzer and drained it to cut the Aggies' deficit to nine, 32-23, at the break.
Trailing by 10 with eight minutes left in regulation, Goddy Marc connected on a jumper and Casey Caruso converted a four-point play after he was fouled shooting a three to make it a 49-45 game with 6:39 to play. After a pair of free throws from the Bulldogs, Caruso fired off another trey to pull DelVal within three with 5:43 on the clock.
DeSales scored the next eight points and put the game out of reach with a 13-5 run over the next three minutes and change to get the lead back to twelve and pull away with the road win.
The Aggies shot 24-for-60 (40%) from the field and 8-for-25 (32%) from 3-point range. DelVal forced 18 turnovers and only surrendered 13 while rebounds were even at 27 apiece.
Three Aggies scored in double-figures including Justin Savage who finished with 14 and seven rebounds. Caruso was 2-for-4 from deep and finished with 11 points and four rebounds, and Ewens Lizima contributed 10 points with four assists and two steals.
Caleb Gibbs led all players in the game with 20 points and 10 rebounds for DeSales who shot 55-percent from the field and 38.9-percent from deep as a team. The Bulldogs also converted 19-of-22 free-throw attempts. Mason Barnes added 18 points and Ryan Boylan finished with 12.
The Aggies will look to go get back to their winning ways at Wilkes on Saturday at 3 p.m. in another MAC Freedom tilt.
