Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Smith Scores Early And Defense Finishes Strong In 1-0 Triumph Over Gwynedd Mercy

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team got an early goal from senior TJ Smith and held on the rest of the way to preserve its first win of the season in a 1-0 victory over Gwynedd Mercy University in non-conference action.

The Aggies (1-2) needed just 7:51 to get on the board as they executed a nice breakout of their own zone and found first-year Kaylee Hartung streaking down the near sideline. Hartung sent a nice pass into the goal mouth where Smith was able to turn and fire a hard and low shot on cage that the keeper could not react to in time and the home team took the lead. For Smtih, it was her second point of the season and first goal of the year while Hartung earned her first collegiate point with the assist.

DelVal outshot the Griffins, 4-2, in the first half and held a 3-1 advantage in corner opportunities as it continued to control the pace of play into the break.

The tide turned in the second half as Gwynedd Mercy held a 6-0 edge in shots, but the Aggie defense led by junor keeper Alyssa Rudd, battled through three green cards in the second half, and made two saves to hold on for the one-goal victory.

DelVal field hockey will look to keep the momentum when they travel to take on the Neumann University Knights on Saturday, September 10th at 1 p.m.
