DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – Ashley Birmingham and Sydney Keagle had two-point games to lead the Delaware Valley University field hockey team to a 3-1 non-conference victory at home over Cedar Crest College.
The Aggies got back to .500 at 3-3 overall while the Falcons fell to 1-4 on the season.
The game was scoreless after one period and DelVal held a 2-1 advantage in shots, but it was the Falcons that had the lone shot on goal. The Aggies had two corner opportunities in the first to zero for the visitors.
DelVal broke the scoreless tie just 3:06 into the second quarter when they earned their third corner of the game. Kenzi Boyd brought the ball in and sent it to Sadie Strober at the top of the arc. She fed a perfect pass to Ashley Birmingham who beat the keeper with a perfect one-time shot to give the Aggies a 1-0 lead. It was Birmingham's second goal of the season and Strober's first assist.
Just over five minutes later, DelVal's pressure in the offensive end forced five corner opportunities and the Aggies cashed in. Sydney Keagle doubled the lead for DelVal with her first goal of the season as she found the ball in tight amongst a scramble and drove it into the cage to make it 2-0 with 6:20 left in the half.
Just before the end of the half, Cedar Crest got one back thanks to a goal from Kiley Marone as she dribbled around the defense and finished with a nice shot. The game remained 2-1 into the halftime break.
DelVal owned a 9-4 advantage in shots in the first half and a 8-1 edge in corners.
Out of the break, the Aggies executed on another corner with Olivia Rexrode cashing in her first career goal. Keagle gathered the ball and flipped one toward the cage where Rexrode was able to redirect it out of the air and into the cage to make it 3-1, DelVal.
The Aggies kept the Falcons off the board the rest of the way and Birmingham converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the game and a 4-1 final.
Birmingham led the team with six shots, three on goal, and her two goals, while Alyssa Rudd went the distance in the cage and made three saves.
DelVal field hockey will begin a four-game road stand on Tuesday, September 20 at Albright at 7 p.m.
