DOYELSTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University volleyball team saw its three-game win-streak come to an end after a hard fought 3-2 setback against Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Lycoming College inside James Work Memorial gym on Tuesday night.
The Aggies dropped to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Warriors improved to 8-1 and 2-1.
In the first set, DelVal opened up a 4-1 lead early and maintained an 11-7 lead later in the set. Lycoming battled back with the next five points to take a one-point lead, but the Aggies slammed the door shut on any threat with a 14-3 run to close the set and take a 1-0 lead after one. Victoria Tucker served six straight points down the stretch.
The second set was back and forth most of the way and was knotted at 10-10 before the visitors pulled away to a 19-12 lead and ultimately cruised to a 25-15 victory to tie the match at one set apiece. The Warriors had 11 kills to just three errors in the second set and earned three service aces.
The third set was much of the same with Lycoming squeaking out a 25-21 win to pull ahead 2-1 in the match. DelVal committed 12 errors in the set and had 10 kills while the Warriors had eight kills to seven errors.
Needing the fourth set to keep the match alive, the Aggies battled through 13 different ties including at 17-17. With Cat Nemil serving, DelVal got three-straight points to take a 20-17 lead, but the Warriors fought back again to pull within one at 21-20. Gretta Schneider and Tucker got consecutive kills to make it a 23-20 game and a couple errors by Lycoming made it 25-21 and sent the match to a fifth and final set. Schneider, Olivia Deffendall, and Emma Helverson each had four kills in the fourth set as the team made just five errors with 15 kills.
DelVal fell into a 2-0 hole early in the fifth set, but Helverson brought the team back with four serves that led to a 5-3 Aggies lead. The deciding set was tied five times and saw three lead changes. When the teams switched sides, the Warriors held an 8-7 lead, but DelVal quickly tied it at 8-8.
Lycoming was able to put the match away with a 7-2 run down the stretch to finish the final set 15-10 and win the match, 3-2.
As a team, the Aggies racked up 51 kills to 35 errors in the match and had 85 digs and 47 assists. The Warriors finished with 43 kills and 29 errors to go with 89 digs and 40 assists. Lycoming dominated at the net with 13 blocks to DelVal's three and the visitors notched 10 aces.
Deffendall finished with 16 kills and 15 digs, Schneider finished with 12 kills to just four errors, to go with 16 digs and a pair of service aces. Helverson and Tucker each notched eight kills. Nemil finished with 41 assists and 13 digs with two kills and an ace. Grace Wilson, the libero, led the team with 19 digs.
Cameron Upcraft led Lycoming with 10 kills while Arianna Santos and Elizabeth Kelson finished with nine apiece. Kendall Myers recorded 40 digs and Marykatelin Button had 30 assists. Upcraft added nine blocks and Santos recorded seven.
The Aggies will travel to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, September 17 for a tri-match against the host Knights and Baruch College.
