DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team opened its 2022 season at home against the Cabrini University Cavaliers on Thursday afternoon, but surrendered four first quarter goals and fell to the visitors, 6-1.
The Cavaliers needed just 16 seconds to get on the board as reigning first team all CSAC honoree Caroline Gallagher raced through the DelVal defense and made a move around the keeper before depositing her first of the season into the cage.
Maggie Cella scored just over three minutes later and Daly Ewing tacked on two before the end of the first quarter to put the Aggies in a 4-0 hole after one.
The second quarter was scoreless until the Cavaliers earned their eighth quarter of the game in the waning seconds of the stanza and capitalized as Sarah Hussey found Adrianna Jones to make it 5-0.
Trailing 6-0 late in the game, DelVal got on the board when TJ Smith fed Ashley Birmingham who beat the keeper from six yards out for the 6-1 final score.
Aggie keeper Alyssa Rudd faced nine shots and made three saves.
DelVal field hockey will look to bounce back when it takes to the road on Saturday to play non-conference foe Widener University at noon.
