DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team opened its three-game Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom set against Wilkes University with a nine-inning home contest at, but surrendered a pair of critical home runs to the Colonels who escaped with a narrow, 5-4, victory.
The Aggies (13-17, 3-13 MAC Freedom) played small ball to get on the board in the first inning. Lead off hitter Timmy Lallis worked a walk, Garrett Zimmerman bunted him over to second, Lallis took third on a wild pitch, and Hank Bielen drove him home.
Starting pitcher Dakota George held the Colonels (18-15, 5-11 MAC Freedom) to one hit through their first two at-bats and DelVal added to its lead in the bottom of the second.
Shawne Eldridge and Jonathan Drews started the frame with singles, Blake Ramos moved them into scoring position with a bunt, and Gage Ambruster delivered a double to left center field to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead after two.
Wilkes responded in the top of the third with a double down the left field line off the bat of Dominic Bayo that plated Michael Patrizio and Chase Vrabel and pulled the Colonels with one. In the next inning, a lead off home run from Nick Pronti pulled the game even at 3-3.
DelVal answered in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out single to center field by Lallis that scored Ambruster who was aboard with a walk and the Aggies regained the lead, 4-3, after four.
It remained a one-run game into the sixth before Wilkes put together a two-out rally highlighted by a two-run home run over the scoreboard in left field from Max Alessi that proved to be the difference in the final score as the Colonels went ahead, 5-4.
Wilkes held DelVal to one hit over the final four innings to secure the victory.
The Aggies finished the game with eight hits including a 2-for-4 effort from Bielen who added an RBI. Ambruster drove in two, scored once, and drew a walk. George went five innings and allowed three earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Ethan Saxe pitched three innings in relief and suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs, three hits, and two walks. Cole Holsinger finished the game and allowed one hit with one strikeout.
J.T. Hibschman got the start for the Colonels and pitched into the eighth inning with four earned runs allowed on eight hits and two walks. Sawyer Kemp closed the game and earned his sixth save of the season after striking out three of the four batters he faced.
Patrizio, the lead off hitter, went 3-for-5 with a run scored and Peyton Schuck had two hits.
The series will conclude tomorrow in Wilkes-Barre with a double header beginning at noon.
