WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – In a pair of low scoring affairs, the Delaware Valley University baseball team dropped both contests of its Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader at Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon. The Colonels took game one, 2-1, and earned a 2-0 win in game two.
Wilkes improved to 20-15 overall and 7-11 in league play while the Aggies dropped to 12-20 and 3-15.
DelVal opened the scoring in game one when Timmy Lallis came home on a wild pitch after reaching with a lead-off single.
Wilkes was held to just two hits through five innings, but came alive in the sixth when AJ Brosious hit a lead-off triple and came home to tie the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Zachary Luksic. The Colonels had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh with the bases loaded and one out, but the Aggies got an unconventional ground ball double play to send the game to extra innings. The ground ball was hit to the second baseman who went home for the force out and the catcher threw back to second to get the runner and end the threat.
Lallis led off the eighth with a single, but was stranded at third after three ground outs. In the bottom of the eighth Wilkes put a runner in scoring position with one out but DelVal worked out of the jam to send the game to the ninth.
The Aggies managed one base runner in the ninth and the Colonels took advantage in the bottom of the frame. With the bases loaded and one out, AJ Brosious brought home the winning run with a fielder's choice back up the middle to give the home team a 2-1 win.
Lallis and Shawne Eldridge had two hits apiece in the opener with Lallis scoring the lone run. Dalton Moore got the start for the Aggies and pitched 5.2 innings with one earned run allowed on four hits and three walks. He struck out two. Alex Crim pitched 1.2 frames and did not allow a hit, while Ridge Watson pitched an inning and suffered the loss after two hits allowed.
In game two, Wilkes' starting pitcher Gage Coudriet held DelVal to four hits and walked one batter while striking out five in game two to improve to 5-0 on the year.
The Aggies left runners on first and third in the fourth inning and had runners at second and third with two outs in the seventh but could not convert.
The only runs of the game came courtesy of a two-run single to left center off the bat of Dominick Bayo in the top of the fourth inning.
Derek Cannon got the start on the mound for DelVal and allowed two earned runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. John Slover pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed just two hits and one walk with one punch out.
