LANGHORNE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team suffered a 4-3 non-conference loss at Cairn University on a walk-off home run by Brian Amantia, Jr. with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
Amantia, Jr. put The Highlanders (20-11) on the board in the first inning s came to bat with runners at second and third and hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 after one.
The Aggies (12-17) got three free bases to load them in the second and Kenny Tunison came in to score on a wild pitch to tie the game. Andrew Panfile followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Shawne Eldridge and the visitors a 2-1 lead.
Starting pitcher John Slover pitched a shutdown inning in the bottom of the second, but was relieved in the third after hitting the lead off batter. Two batters later, Samuel Spadea hit a single back up the middle to tie the game at 2-2. Amantia, Jr., who was aboard via hit by pitch later came around to score after a catcher's interference call against DelVal. That put Cairn back in the lead, 3-2, after three.
The Aggies answered again in the next half inning as they worked four walks to generate a run and tie the game at 3-3.
The two teams combined for just six hits over the next four and half innings and the game remained tied into the ninth.
DelVal had a runner at second with two outs in the top of the frame, but could not capitalize, and Amantia, Jr. ended the game in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off home run to fight field.
The Aggies managed four hits in the game from four different players while Hank Bielen got aboard four times with walks. Eldridge was 1-for-3 with two walks and Panfile worked a pair of walks.
Cairn had six hits led by two apiece from Joshua Melchior and Jared Sucro who each scored once. Amantia, Jr. finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Slover pitched two innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits, and threw one strikeout. Ethan Saxe finished the game and was credited with the loss after allowing just one hit and one run and striking out two.
Four Highlander pitchers combined for 11 walks and six strikeouts.
The Aggies will get back to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play with a nine inning home contest at 3 p.m. on Friday to kickoff a three-game series against Wilkes University.
