Aggies Explode for 17 Runs in Doubleheader Split with Bethany

MYRTLE BEACH (SC)--- The Delaware Valley baseball team plated 17 runs across two games in a doubleheader split against Bethany College on Monday. The Aggies fell in game one 6-5 and won game two, 12-6.

GAME ONE

The Aggies scored three runs in the top of the first to get the scoring started. After a dropped third strike allowed James Kelly to reach first, Timmy Lallis singled into right. Jonathan Drews was then hit by a pitch to load the bases when Shawne Eldridge brought in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Lallis would score the second run after an error off the bat of Hank Bielen. Brendon Hoagland drove the in third run with an infield single after a comebacker off Bethany starter Zach Pressnell's foot.

The Aggies held a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third, when Quest Wilson hit a solo home run to left to get the Bison on the board. Bethany scored their second run of the inning on an error and evened the score at 3-3 on an infield single by Grant Shaffner.

DelVal took the lead back in the top of the fourth, when Gage Ambruster singled into left field to score Hoagland.

The Bison answered in the bottom half of the frame, when Kevin Pollock reached on an infield single to short and Michael Whitehearse scored from second base on a throwing error on the play.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Shaffner gave the Bison the lead with an RBI groundout to first base, putting Bethany up 5-4. Cameron Schaub extend the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single into right field.

The Aggies cut the deficit in half in the top of the seventh with a Lallis sacrifice fly. They then put a runner on first with two outs, but were caught stealing to end the game.

Gage Ambruster finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and Brendon Hoagland went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Dalton Moore allowed five runs (three earned) over five innings while scattering nine hits with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Michael Whiteherse led off game two off with a solo home run to quickly put Bethany up 1-0. After Kevin Pollock tripled, Luke Beatty scored him with a sacrifice fly to give the Bison a 2-0 lead after a half inning.

The Aggies responded with their biggest inning of the season, as they plated five runs in the bottom of the frame. Game Amrbuster scored the first run on a wild pitch and Timmy Lallis tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI single to left to score Jimmy Kelly. Jonathan Drews put the Aggies in front with a two-run home run off the scoreboard in left field to make it 4-2. 


Garrett Zimmerman capped off the five-run first with an RBI single to center to score Shawne Eldridge.

DelVal kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second, adding two more runs. Drews extend the lead to 6-2 as he scored on a passed ball and Eldridge plated Hoagland with an RBI single, widening the lead to 7-2 after two innings.

The Bison cut into the lead in the top of the third inning with an RBI single, bringing the score to 7-3.

The Aggies continued to swing hot bats in the bottom of the third, as Timmy Lallis came to the plate with the bases loaded and ripped a two-run single into center to score Ambruster and Blake Ramos to give the Aggies their largest lead at 9-3. 

The Bison battled back in the fourth, plating three runs on three hits with the help of one Aggie error to trim the lead to 9-6.

The slugfest continued in the bottom of the frame, with Delval getting all three runs back to lead 12-6. Eldridge led off with a single and was sacrificed to second with a bunt by Garrett Zimmerman. Blake Ramos was hit by a pitch with two outs, bringing up Ambruster. He came through with a two run double to right center. 

The Aggies scored their third run of the inning thanks to two Bison errors on the same play, making the score 12-6 after four innings.

John Slover replaced starter Nate Reed on the mound for the Aggies in the fifth and dominated the final three frames. The sophomore retired all nine batters he faced, striking out four, as he picked up his first career save.

The Aggies got huge performances up and down the lineup in game two, led by a 3-for-4 showing with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen by Shawne Eldridge.

Gage Ambruster went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, three runs scored and a walk.

James Kelly added two hits with a double, a run scored and a stolen base.

Timmy Lallis collected his second two-hit game of the early season, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base.

Jonathan Drews 2-for-4 day was highlighted by his two-run homerun in the first inning.

Nate Reed picked up his first career win in his first start of the season.

The Aggies continue their spring break trip with a 9 a.m. game against Ursinus on Tuesday.
