Aggies Score Early, Crim Shines in Relief in 4-2 Win Over Gwynedd Mercy

MYRTLE BEACH (SC)--- The Delaware Valley baseball team used three first inning runs and a shutdown performance from first-year Alex Crim out of the bullpen to secure a 4-2 win over Gwynedd Mercy in their opening game on the spring break trip.

After the first two batters were retired for the Aggies in the top of the first, Timmy Lallis, Hank Bielen and Jonathan Drews each singled to load the bases. Gwynedd Mercy starter Trey Livingstone then balked to score the Aggies' first run of the game. Shawne Eldridge followed with a single into right field to score Drews and Bielen, capping off a three run first inning.

In the bottom of the first, the Griffins put their first two runners on base with walks. Nick Price then sacrificed the runners to second and third. Brett Swire brought home the first run for the Griffins with an RBI groundout and then scored their second run on a wild pitch, cutting the lead to 3-2.

DelVal added on to their lead in the second inning, as Gage Ambruster scored on a wild pitch.

The Griffins threatened in the bottom of the second with runners on first and second, but starter Ethan Saxe picked up a big strike out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the third, Gwynedd Mercy put runners on first and third with nobody out to start the frame. Saxe again came up big, getting a strikeout and inducing a 4-6-3 double play to keep the score at 4-2.

The Griffins put the pressure on again in the fifth, leading off with a single and a walk. After a groundout, Alex Crim relieved Saxe on the mound and got the next two batters to pop out in foul territory to first base to get out of the jam.

After a leadoff double for the Griffins in the bottom of the seventh, Nick Price lined one into left, but Jonathan Drews came up with a fantastic diving catch and doubled the runner off second base.

Crim pitched a 1-2-3 inning in both the eighth and ninth to finish a fantastic relief appearance, firing 4.2 innings allowing just two hits with four strikeouts.

Jimmy Kelly went 3-for-5 for the Aggies, while Shawne Eldridge and Jonathan Drews each picked up two hits.

The Aggies will be back in action tomorrow at 3 p.m. for a doubleheader against Bethany College.
