DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's lacrosse team overcame an early four-goal deficit to open Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom play with a 10-8 road victory over Wilkes University on a cold Wednesday night.
The Colonels fell to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Aggies improved to 3-6 and 1-0 in MAC Freedom play.
DelVal got off 13 shots in the first quarter but just four were on target and Wilkes' keeper Ryan Lasher was equal to each task. Meanwhile, the Colonels were held to seven shots, four on target, and found the back of the net twice to take a 2-0 lead into the second. The two tallies were separated by just 34 seconds and each set up by Hunter Riley.
Two and a half minutes into the second, Tre Williams got the Aggies on the board with his fourth of the season, an unassisted tally. Wilkes countered with three goals separated by 3:18 to extend its lead to 5-1 with just over five minutes to play in the half.
Over the next 19 minutes of game play, DelVal dominated with a 7-0 run to pull ahead and take an 8-5 lead into the fourth. Travis Berman scored three goals during the run including the first two, separated by just 12 seconds.
Alex Myers scored his second of the night and 19th of the season 3:26 into the fourth quarter to pull the Colonels within two, 8-6.
Two minutes later, Berman fired back with his fourth of the evening to regain the three-goal lead for the Aggies.
Wilkes pulled within one with 6:17 left in regulation, but DelVal staved off the attack and got another tally from Williams to close the game and earn the 10-8 MAC Freedom victory.
Berman finished with a career-high four goals to lead the Aggies while Williams added two goals and an assist, and Lucien St. Onge dished out three helpers. Keller (2G) and Napieralski (1G, 1A) each had two-point games and faceoff man Nick Matthew continued his good play with 15-of-21 wins and 11 ground balls. Matthew also added an assist to his totals.
Jim Murphy played all 60 minutes in goal for DelVal and made 15 saves, as did his counterpart at the other end.
Offensively, Wilkes got three goals and two assists from Eric Ormsby while Alex Myers and Luke Palladino added two goals apiece.
The Aggies return home this Saturday to take on Misericordia University at 1 p.m.
