DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team used three first half goals to overcome visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival Lycoming College, 3-0, under the lights at home on Friday night.
The Aggies improved to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in league play while the Warriors fell to 2-9 and 0-2.
DelVal had the first scoring chance in the game when Kenzi Boyd found Sydney Keagle in open space, but the Lycoming defense recovered quickly to eliminate the chance. Later in the quarter, with 8:30 left in regulation got another scoring chance as senior Sadie Strober sent a shot toward the cage that TJ Smith got a piece of to direct toward the cage but keeper Isabella Bobe was there to kick it away and keep the game scoreless.
The Aggies earned two corners over the next 90 seconds, but did not capitalize until just over six minutes left in the first. First-year Olivia Rexrode beat a defender to the end line and delivered a perfect pass to Keagle in front of the cage who drove home her fourth goal of the season to make it a 1-0 game. For Rexrode, it was her first assist of the season.
Early in the second quarter, DelVal earned another corner and called on Smith to play the ball in. Smith played the ball to Boyd who dished to Rexrode for a shot from the top of the arch that was redirected passed the keeper by Smith at the far post for a 2-0 lead. It was Smith's second goal of the season.
With under three minutes to play in the first half, the Aggies earned their sixth corner of the game and got a couple shots on goal before the ball illegally played by Lycoming resulting in a penalty stroke attempt for DelVal. The Aggies called on Ashley Birmingham to take the stroke and she went with a hard shot high to the left side of the cage to make it a 3-0 game. It was Birmingham's team-leading fifth of the season.
DelVal held Lycoming to just three shots the rest of the way and cruised to the 3-0 victory.
