DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University men's soccer team surrendered a goal in the final second of regulation that broke a 1-1 tie and lifted visiting DeSales University to a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.
The Bulldogs (6-9-2, 1-5-1 MAC Freedom) took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break thanks to a goal from junior Elek McDonald in the 39th minute off a set piece. First-year Owen Maher played a corner kick into the box where fellow rookie Liam MacDonald rose to get a head on it and send it to McDonald who tipped it home.
The Aggies (6-8, 1-6 MAC Freedom) responded with a well-executed set piece of their own early in the second half. Senior Thomas Fitzsimmons took a corner kick with his right foot and bent it through a maze of players and directly into the goal in the 49th minute for his second of the season. It was Fitzsimmons' eighth point of the year.
In the waning seconds of regulation, DeSales worked the ball into the box and a shot from Larry Agyei was blocked but the rebound caromed right to the foot of first-year Bryan Flor who rolled a shot passed the keeper just before the buzzer for the 2-1 final.
Andrew Roberto played all 90 minutes in goal for DelVal and made six saves while three different players registered a shot on goal.
Up next, the Aggies will host Misericordia University on Saturday at 12 p.m. Before the game, DelVal will honor its seniors with a special senior day ceremony.
