DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team earned a thrilling shootout victory over Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Misericordia University as senior TJ Smith tied the game with less than three minutes to play, and senior Sadie Strober scored the game-winner in the shootout to seal the 3-2 victory.
The Aggies improved to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in MAC Freedom play. With two games remaining, DelVal is tied for the fifth and final playoff spot with King's. The Monarchs own the tie-breaker by way of the head-to-head victory over the Aggies in their only meeting this season. DelVal has Stevens (4-2) and DeSales (7-0) still to play, while King's faces Misericordia (2-4) and Stevens in its final two games.
With three minutes to play and the Aggies trailing by one, DelVal's offensive pressure led to a corner opportunity. First-year Kenzie Boyd played the ball in to Ashley Birmingham who put a hard shot on cage from a sharp angle. The rebound bounced to Smith who blasted a shot passed the keeper and into the cage to tie the game at 2-2. Misericordia had a chance to win the game late in regulation, but junior keeper Alyssa Rudd came up with a big save to send the game to overtime.
DelVal dominated the 7-on-7 overtime periods with four shots in each period compared to just four total for the Cougars. Rudd made a number of quality plays in overtime including two big saves as neither team could find a goal and the game went to a shootout.
After the first five shooters, each team had two goals. Kenzie Boyd and Strober scored for DelVal while Ashley Pitz and Abigail O'Donnell scored for Misericordia. Boyd and Strober both came in with speed, made one move to their forehand, and beat the keeper with low shots.
The sixth shooter for the Cougars was Tatyanna Lainez, and Rudd made a great play to keep her attempt out of the cage. The Aggies called upon Strober to try and win the game and the senior delivered. She came in with speed again, beat the keeper to the near post, and rolled a shot into the open cage to send the home team into a frenzy as DelVal celebrated the 3-2 triumph on the field.
The game began with Misericordia scoring in the first 10 minutes of regulation as Meghan Radnoff earned an unassisted tally. The Aggies did not get on the board until five minutes left in the first half when Birmingham setup Boyd to the game at 1-1. It remained a tie game into the second half.
The Cougars regained the lead when Lily Metress netted her first of the night to give the visitors a 2-1 led and setup the late-game dramatics.
DelVal will look to keep its playoff chances alive this weekend when it travels to Stevens Institute of Technology for the biggest game of the season beginning at 4 p.m.
