HOBOKEN (Nj.) – The Delaware Valley University women's soccer team held a one-goal lead after the first 22 minutes of regulation but host Stevens Institute of Technology rallied to score five in the second half and pull away with a 7-3 Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom victory.
The Aggies (6-7-1, 0-4 MAC Freedom) got on the board first with a goal by Jess Williamson just 9:44 into regulation. Off a set piece from the near sideline, DelVal played the ball into the box where Marley Bramsway collected it, turned, and sent a ball toward the net that deflected off a player and landed in front of Williamson who made no mistake from 15 yards out. It was Williamson's team-leading 13th goal of the season and the fourth assist for Bramsway, as it gave the Aggies a 1-0 lead.
Just under eight minutes later, the Ducks (55-3, 4-0 MAC Freedom) tied the game when Sarah Wnorowski worked the ball to the end line and sent a long cross into the box where Amelia Rehrig put a perfect head ball on it at the six-yard line to tie the game.
Olivia Sherwood made seven saves in goal over the first 20 minutes of play, and Williamson drew a foul in the 23rd minute that gave DelVal a direct kick from 28 yards out. Gillian Baker took the kick and placed a perfect shot over the keeper's head and under the cross bar for her fourth goal of the season to put the Aggies back in front, 2-1.
Less than two minutes later, Stevens knotted the score again and again it was Rehrig who used a left footed shot from inside the box to beat Sherwood and tie the game at 2-2. Fiona Matthews was credited with the assist.
The game remained tied at the break, but the home team exploded offensively in the second. For different players scored for the Ducks in the first 16:30 minutes of the half and Stevens jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
The Aggies got one back in the 72nd minute when Williamson slid a pass from just outside the 18 to Baker who was all alone in the box. Baker rolled a left footed shot passed the charging keeper for her second of the night and fifth of the season. It was Williamson's team-best fifth assist of the season and 31st point.
Stevens tacked on one more in the 76th minute and ultimately sealed the 7-3 victory. Stevens finished with 30 shots on goal to five for the Aggies and Sherwood made a stellar 23 saves in goal.
DelVal's next game will be a senior day celebration as the team welcomes in Wilkes University for another MAC Freedom tilt at 4 p.m.
