DOYLESTOWN (PA)--- In a rematch of their season opener, the Delaware Valley men's basketball team saw four players finish in double figures, led by 16 from Jordan Gombs, as the Aggies led from start to finish to pick up the 79-69 win over Gwynedd Mercy in non-conference action.
The Aggies (8-6) opened the game on an 8-2 run over the first 4:18 of the game before a Manny Clark layup brought Gwynedd Mercy (8-5) to within four. Francis Robles Montas answered with a three pointer and a jump shot and Jordan Gombs converted a three-point play to grow the Aggies lead to 16-4 with 12:47 left in the first half. The Aggies forced the Griffins into four turnovers during the 16-4 burst and held the visitors to 2-of-9 shooting from the floor.
Gwynedd Mercy responded with an 8-2 run to close the gap to 18-12 midway through the half. From there, the Aggies took control, scoring the next 14 points of the game to give them a 32-13 lead with 4:01 left in the first half. During that stretch, DelVal shot 4-of-7 from the field and converted all four free throw attempts. Five different Aggies scored during the run, led by five from Pernell Ghee. A Ryan Black layup grew the lead to 23 before the Griffins eventually trimmed it to 17 heading into halftime.
The Aggies held Gwynedd Mercy to 29.6 percent shooting in the first half and forced them into 18 turnovers while they shot 44 percent from the field and committed nine turnovers.
Ghee started the second half by connecting from long range. After Gombs knocked down one free throw, Ghee then came away with a steal on the next possession and finished with a dunk on the other end to push the lead back to 23.
The Griffins clawed their way back, as they went on a 12-3 run by going 6-of-7 from the field, trimming the deficit to 50-36 with 14:39 left. After Ghee put an end to the run with a layup, the Aggies held at least a 15 point lead until late in the game.
A Godly Marc layup with 5:31 remaining extend the Aggies lead to 71-53. The Griffins turned up the pressure and scored the next seven points in under a minute to trim the advantage to 11. Matt Paulus knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the lead back to 13 and the Aggies finished the game going 8-of-12 from the charity stripe in the final 4:03 to come away with the 79-69 win.
Jordan Gombs finished with a season and career-high 16 points to lead the Aggies. The first-year added six rebounds and three steals.
Godly Marc was second on the team in scoring with 15 points while contributing four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Pernell Ghee chipped in 13 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go with two steals.
Francis Robles Montas was the fourth Aggie in double figures with 10 points.
Matt Paulus finished with a career-high five steals and went 8-for-8 from the free throw line for all eight of his points.
DelVal forced Gwynedd Mercy into 31 turnovers, which lead to 27 points. The Aggies knocked down a season-best 27 foul shots, as they shot 75 percent from the free throw line.
The Aggies will be back in action Wednesday at DeSales with tip-off scheduled for 8 p.m.
