CENTER VALLEY (PA)--- The Delaware Valley men's basketball traveled to first place DeSales Wednesday night and trailed from start to finish, as the Aggies came up on the short end of a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest, 90-66.
After DeSales (15-1, 8-0) opened the game with an 8-2 lead, Matt Paulus knocked down one of his four three pointers in the game to trim the lead to three. The Bulldogs scored the next two buckets before Godly Marc converted a layup and Francis Robles Montas connected from long range to bring the Aggies (8-7, 4-4) to within two, 12-10.
The Aggies stayed within arms reach, trailing by three with 11:40 remaining in the first half. From there, DeSales went on a 9-2 run, knocking down three pointers on their next three possessions to extend their lead to 25-15. DelVal later answered with a 7-3 run with four consecutive Pernell Ghee points and a Jordan Gombs triple as they trailed 28-22 with 5:52 left in the first half.
Teams traded buckets for the next four minutes before the hosts scored the final four points of the half, taking a 38-28 lead into the break.
After Dat Lambert hit a three pointer to start the final 20 minutes for DesSales, Thomas Ibidapo made a layup and Paulus drained another triple, bring the deficit to 41-33. The Bulldogs would not let the Aggies get any closer, as they held a nine point lead before they took over the game.
Ryan Boylan got an 11-0 run started for DeSales on a layup off a pass from Keba Mitchell. The Bulldogs would then score on their next four possessions, as Mason Barnes came away with a steal and found Timmy Edwards on a fast break for a layup to cap the burst, growing the lead to 59-39 with 13:08 remaining.
DelVal continued to battle, as Casey Caruso scored five straight points off the bench to bring the Aggies to within 15 with 8:19 left. DeSales responded quickly and kept the lead at 15 or more the remainder of the way, as they came away with the 90-66 victory.
DeSales finished with an extremely balanced attack, as Elijah Eberly led the team with 12 points. Ryan Boylan and Jordan Holmqvist each finished with 11 for the Bulldogs. In total, 12 Bulldogs scored, including four others with at least eight points. Matt Kachelries finished with nine assists and Mason Barnes had seven.
Jordan Gombs had a game-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and finished with four assists. Matt Paulus (4-of-5 3PT) and Godly Marc each chipped in 12 to pace the Aggies.
The Bulldogs shot 59% from the field while assisting on 31 of 38 made field goals. They also hit 11-of-21 shots from beyond the arc. The Aggies were able to hit 45% of their three points (9-of-20), but struggled overall, going 24-of-66 (36%) from the floor.
The Aggies will be back in action Saturday, as they host Misericordia at 3 p.m. for a MAC Freedom contest.
