Aggies Win First Set, But Fall In MAC Freedom Opener To Wilkes

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- The Delaware Valley University volleyball team won a thrilling first set, 30-28, but dropped the next three, 25-17, 25-20, and 25-17, to visiting Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom foe Wilkes University as the visitors came away with the 3-1 win. 

The Aggies (1-1, 0-1 MAC Freedom) led by as many five, 13-8, before the Colonels rallied for five-straight to tie the score. The Green and Gold fought off four game-points for Wilkes down the stretch and finished with three straight points to earn the 30-28 win. Olivia Deffendall had a kill and Grace Kane had an ace in the final stretch. 

In set two, DelVal scored three-straight points to get a 5-4 lead, but the Colonels went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead, 11-5, and never looked back. Midway through the third set, the Aggies tied the score at 13-13 with another three-point run, before each team went on 4-0 runs to pull the score tie again at 17 apiece. Wilkes scored five of the final six points in the game to take the 2-1 lead in the match. 

In the fourth game, the Colonels led by as many as seven on two occasions including late in the set, 18-11. Kane helped the Aggies pull within three, 19-16, but a 6-1 run by the visitors sealed the match. 

Wilkes had 56 kills and 17 errors in the match compared to 36 kills and 21 errors for DelVal. Each team had 13 aces. 

Caitlin Nemil had a match-high 28 assists with nine digs and a kill while Emma Helverson led the Aggies with 13 digs and 11 kills. Deffendall finished with 12 digs and eight kills and Gretta Schneider led the squad with five service aces.
