ABINGTON (Pa.) – Three games ended by a score of 25-23 and the Delaware Valley University volleyball team won game four, 25-19, to force a fifth and final set but at the end of the night, host Penn State Abington outlasted the Aggies with a 15-11 win in game five to clinch the match, 3-2.
The two teams split the first two sets with each winning by the two-point margin. DelVal (2-9) had 11 kills and six errors on 43 attempts in the first and finished with the same amount of kills and one less error on 38 attempts in the second.
The key to the Aggie win in the second set was six service aces, led by four from first-year Grace Kane and two by fellow rookie Olivia Deffendall. Late in the second, DelVal trailed, 23-21, but a kill by Defendall won the serve back for the Green and Gold and her second ace of the set sealed the 25-23 victory.
In the third, the Aggies got out to a 8-1 lead and maintained advantages of 16-8 and 22-20 late in the set. The Nittany Lions (9-8) rallied to take a 23-22 lead, but a kill by Victoria Tucker brought the game to a deadlock and the serve back to DelVal. Caitlin Nemil served, but Penn State got a kill from Emma Mey, and an ace from Ruthanna McMurtie to claim the win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Aggies jumped out to another big lead in the fourth and led by as many as 11 at 18-7. They never let the home team back into the set and held on for a 25-19 win to force the fifth and final game. DelVal had 10 kills and four aces in the frame.
The fifth set was back-and-forth with the Aggies last lead coming at 7-6. From there, Penn State used a 6-1 run to take a four-point lead and held on down the stretch to earn a 15-11 win, and claim the 3-2 match victory.
