DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University field hockey team played its first Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom contest of the season as it welcomed Misericordia University to Doylestown on Saturday, but came out on the wrong end of the 3-0 final score.
The Cougars improved to 3-4 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Aggies fell to 1-7 and 0-1.
DelVal had the first shot on goal as Maiya Wendel beat the defense and ripped on one cage that was blocked aside. From there it was all Misericordia as it did not allow a shot against the rest of the way. The Cougars broke the scoreless tie nine minutes into regulation when they executed a nice tic-tac-toe passing play that resulted in a tap-in goal for Lily Metress.
In remained 1-0 until the second quarter when Anna Effinger backhanded one into the cage from out front to make it a two-goal game with 10:13 left in the half. Misercordia added one more late in the third quarter as it was awarded a penalty shot that Effinger buried into the left side of the cage for her second of the day and, ultimately, the 3-0 final.
Alyssa Rudd made 14 saves in cage for the Aggies.
