WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University women's lacrosse team traveled to Wilkes University for a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom tilt, but fell to the home team 16-11.
The Colonels (2-4, 2-3 MAC Freedom) scored three in the first 2:53 before Ashley Birmingham and Jaden Keefer netted back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart to make it a one-goal game five minutes into the first half.
The 3-2 score held for six minutes before a four-goal outburst by Wilkes gave it a 7-2 lead with 12:54 remaining in the half. Less than a minute later, Shannon Petrillo scored on a great individual effort, rushing in from 40 yards out before cutting through several defenders on her way to her fourth goal of the season.
The Colonels added three more goals over the next eight minutes of play before Gabby Borst netted her first of the season followed by Sabrina Butlers fourth of the year to make it 10-5 headed into the break.
The Aggies came out hot in the second half, outscoring the Colonels 4-1 over the first 12 minutes. During the stretch, Borst picked up her second of the game, Kyra McKeegan and Isabella Walls scored on free position attempts, and Sadie Strober scored her first career goal as an Aggie to make it a two-goal game, 11-9.
Each team found the back of the net once over the next six minutes, including when Borst found Butler alone in front for her second of the game.
The home team outscored DelVal 4-1 over the final nine minutes of regulation, with the lone goal for the Green and Gold scored by Walls, to come away with 16-11 MAC Freedom victory.
Butler and Borst each finished the game with two goals and an assist and Walls recorded her first-career two-goal game.
Goalkeeper Rebecca Kingsley made a season-high 13 saves. Borst and Nycole Hale tied each other with a game-high five groundballs.
The Aggies will return home this Saturday at 1 PM for another MAC Freedom contest versus the Misericordia Cougars.
