WILKES-BARRE (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team concluded the 2021 regular season with a pair of Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom setbacks at Wilkes University, ending its stretch of six games in three days.
The Colonels (16-12) won game one comfortably, 11-1, but needed a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 5-4 victory over the Aggies (3-25) in game two.
Wilkes got 11 runs on 13 hits in the opener including 3-for-4 efforts from Dominik Bayo and Jonah Harder. Bayo led the way with four RBI and two runs scored and Harder followed with two runs batted in and two runs scored while Tony Molitoris pitched a complete game and fanned six batters.
Jonathan Drews and Hank Bielen led DelVal with two hits apiece and Drews drove in the lone run with an RBI single in the seventh that scored Bobby Bright who was aboard with a double. The Aggies had eight hits and worked one walk as a team. Ethan Saxe got the start on the mound and went five innings while striking out one and Shayne Smith pitched the sixth and also got a strikeout.
In game two, DelVal trailed, 3-0, going into the eighth inning as starting pitcher Garret Zimmerman had allowed just two earned runs and struck out four over six innings. Drews led off the top of the eighth with a single down the right field line, Vinny Colavitti followed with a base knock of his own, and Bielen worked a walk to load the bases with nobody out. Two batters later, Shawn Eldridge singled to left and two runs scored to pull the Aggies to within one, 3-2, with one out. Dylan Strunk tied the game with an RBI on a fielder's choice, and a wild pitch allowed Eldridge to cross the plate and give DelVal a one-run lead.
Wilkes tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly to center field from Nick Pronti that plated Bayo, but relief pitcher Zak Clark worked out of a bases loaded the jam to keep the score knotted at 4-4 going to the ninth.
The Aggies had one base runner in the ninth as Bielen worked a two-out walk but was stranded at first base. In the bottom of the frame, the Colonels got a lead-off single and moved the runner to second on a bunt before Bayo delivered the walk off base hit that allowed Spezzaferra to score from second for the win.
Eldridge led DelVal with three hits in the game, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Bright followed with two hits and Zgura had a double in the game. Wilkes managed 14 hits in the game but committed four errors as a team.
