Baseball Concludes Series With Misericordia; Drops Pair In Doubleheader

DALLAS (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team concluded its four-game set at Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival Misericorida University on Thursday afternoon, but dropped both contests of the doubleheader.

The Cougars (17-7) took game one, 14-1, and defeated the Aggies (5-19), 9-7, in the nightcap.

Misericordia got to DelVal early and often in the opener as it piled on 14 runs in seven inning while holding the visitors to one run on five hits and one walk. The cougars got 14 hits from 12 different players including a two-run homerun in the third from Sean Boylan. Boylan picked up another RBI in the first with a sacrifice fly, and Owen VanNewkirk also drove in three with a bases clearing double to right center in the second.

Shawn Eldridge drove in the Aggies lone run as he plated Tony Mrozowski who was aboard with a double and moved to third on a single by Jonathan Drews.

In game two, the Cougars scored four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first to take another early lead. Boylan had the big knock with a two-RBI double to the gap in right center. DelVal got one back in the next half inning as Brendon Hoagland got aboard with a lead-off double and came around to score on an RBI single by Nick Koch to make it 4-1.

However, Misericordia plated another three in the bottom of the second to extend its lead to 7-1. After loading the bases on two singles and a walk to start the inning, Boylan drove in another with a sacrifice fly, and two more came home on another sac. fly and an error.

In the third, The Aggies got two runs back as Hoagland hit his first career homerun, a two run shot, to make it a 7-3 game. DelVal got the shutdown inning as it retired the Cougars in order in the bottom of the third.

Then in the top of the fifth, the Aggies tied the game with four runs on three hits. They loaded the bases with one out for the hot-hitting DH Hoagland, and he delivered again with a single to left that brought in Vinny Colavitti and Drews. Later in the frame, and with the bases full again, Dylan Strunk delivered a double down the left field line to plate Hoagland and Evan Scally and knot the game at 7-7.

Boylan led off the bottom of the fifth for Misericordia with a single and came around to score what would be the game-winning run with a double from Randy Mateo. The Cougars got the Aggies to go down in order in the final two frames and Boylan picked up another RBI in the bottom of the sixth for the 9-7 final.

Boylan finished the day 3-for-5 with seven runs batted in and four runs scored and the two-hole hitter, Manganella had three hits in game two and three runs scored.

Jared Sterner pitched a complete game for DelVal and gave up eight earned runs with three walks and two strikeouts. Hoagland went 3-for-4 at the dish with four RBI and three runs scored.

The Aggies will be right back at it tomorrow with its final two home games of the regular season as it welcomes Wilkes for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
