Baseball FallsTo FDU-Florham In Home Doubleheader

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom rival FDU-Florham at home as the Devils completed an extra-inning come-from-behind win in the opener and scored three runs in the eighth to complete the sweep before the sun went down.

The Devils (7-13) got out to an early 5-0 lead in the opener with as it scored off a combined five hits and five errors of the first two innings.

The Aggies (2-14) got three back in the bottom of the second when Garrett Zimmerman led off the frame with a double and Jonathan Drews followed with an RBI double to bring him home. Timmy Lallis added an RBI single that scored Bobby Bright to make it 5-3.

DelVal got the shutdown inning it needed in the top of the third and tied the game at five apiece in the bottom of the inning two runs on three hits and two errors. In the fourth, it took the lead on another two hits and two FDU errors. Shawn Eldridge and Hank Bielen scored the runs.

The Aggies maintained the 7-5 lead into the seventh inning and needed just three outs to earn the win. The Devils were down to their final out with a runner on first base, but a single, a walk, and a wild pitch allowed one run to score. The next batter, Tyrus Chippendale, tied the game with an RBI single to the shortstop.

DelVal got the next batter to ground out to the pitcher and took to the plate with a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh. It got one runner aboard, but could not cash in and the game went to extra innings.

FDU got its first two batters aboard in the eighth and later had runners on second and third with one out. Pinch hitter Chris Ciancimino grounded into a fielder's choice that allowed Michael Tufano to score what would prove to be the game-winning run.

Bobby Bright gave the Aggies hope in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out single and then stole second base, but was stranded their as the Devils came away with the 8-7 win.

Lallis, Saxe, and Zimmerman all had three hits to lead DelVal and Dakota George went 6.2 innings with two earned runs allowed and one strikeout. Nate Reed suffered the loss after allowing one earned run on two hits.

In game two, the Devils opened the scoring with three runs  on three hits in the third inning, but the Aggies responded with RBI singles from Eldridge and Vinny Colavitti, and an RBI triple from Lallis in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.

Tufano put FDU back on top with a solo homerun in the fifth to make it 4-3, but DelVal was able to tie it again in the bottom of the sixth as Jonathan Drews was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The next batter was retired via a ground out and three were left stranded.

In the eighth, Tommy Moore led off with a single and came around to score on an RBI double by DJ Gonnelli. Two more RBI singles game the Devils a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.

With two outs, Lallis got aboard with an infield single, but was stranded at first base and the game was called due to darkness as FDU escaped with the three-run win.

Lallis had another three-hit effort and Zakary Zgura went 2-for-3 while Bright scored twice with one hit. Garrett Zimmerman pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four earned runs on eight hits and Zak Clark finished the game with five hits and three earned runs allowed.
