Baseball Drops Two To Stevens On Opening Day

DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team took to its home field for the first time in 685 days as it opened the 2021 season with a Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom doubleheader against Stevens Tech. The Ducks offense rolled in a pair of wins over the Aggies, 15-8, and 11-2.

Stevens (3-0) opened up an early 6-0 lead on four hits and an error after two innings in the opener.

DelVal (0-2) responded in the third as the offense exploded for seven runs on seven hits as 13 players came to the plate. Three of the first four batters in the frame doubled including first-years Cole Holsinger and Jonathan Drews along with senior Timmy Lallis who pulled one down the right field line to score two. Shawn Eldridge singled home Lallis and Holsinger got his second hit of the inning with a bases loaded single that plated Jared Sterner and Hank Bielen to tie the game at 6-6. The Aggies took the lead with one more in the third as Eldridge scored on a passed ball to make it 7-6 going into the fourth.

Kyle Bailey got the shutdown inning in the top of the fourth and DelVal tacked on one more in the bottom of the inning as Eldridge got his second hit of the game with a single to center that scored Bobby Bright to make it 8-6.

The Ducks regained the lead in the fifth with four runs on three hits to pull ahead, 10-8. Bailey gave up one run and was relieved by John Slover who took over with the bases loaded. Slover gave up two hits in the inning before getting a strikeout to end the frame.

Stevens added three more in the sixth on three hits and two in the seventh thanks to a two-RBI single by Nate Zuckerman for the 15-8 final.

Eldridge and Holsinger each had two hits, two RBI, and a run scored. Five different pitchers took to the mound with rookie Ethan Saxe getting the start and Bailey suffering the loss. The Ducks starter, Leo Bristow, allowed seven runs on seven hits and reliever Alex Smith earned the win.

Dakota George started on the mound for the Aggies in game two and got a double play to end a 1-2-3 first inning. In the bottom of the first, DelVal loaded the bases with nobody out and put two runs on the board with RBI's from Eldridge and Sterner.

The rest of the way, the Aggies managed just three hits and failed to get another run across the plate while the visitors scored three in the second, five in the third, and three more in the abbreviated eighth inning before the game was called due to darkness.

DelVal totaled four hits and one walk in the game with four batters being fanned. Conversely, the Ducks managed 17 hits and worked six walks. Roy Iversen went the distance for Stevens and allowed four hits and one walk. Thomas Paulich had four hits in the game and Johnny Albrecht went 3-for-5 with three RBI.

These two teams will do it again tomorrow with a doubleheader on the turf at the home of Stevens University.
