FORT PIERCE (Fl.) – The Delaware Valley University baseball team was outscored, 20-2, as it was swept by Gettysburg College in a doubleheader during the second day of its spring break trip in Florida.
In the opener, the Bullets scored at least one run in every inning including a big 10-run sixth inning. On the mound, Erik Wortman held the Aggies to just one hit in a shutout bid as he punched out six en route to the 17-0 triumph.
Cody Brown had the lone hit for DelVal.
Troy Lachenmayer got the start and went four innings with six runs, four earned, allowed and two walks.
In game two, the Aggies got on the board first as
Hank Bielen led off the second inning with a double and DelVal played small ball to bring him in with
Zach Goodell earning the RBI. In the third
Dan Hopkins singled home
Joey Lodato to extend the lead to 2-0 going into the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the third, Gettysburg loaded the bases with one out and a fielder's choice brought home Matthew Peipher to make it 2-1.
Neither team got another hit until the bottom of the fifth when Ryan Augustus took
Garrett Zimmerman deep for a two-run home to give the Bullets their first lead of the game, and ultimately bring in the game-winning run, 3-2.
Lachenmayer led off the sixth with a double for the Aggies, but was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice to end the threat. DelVal was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Bielen was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game two and Hopkins and Lachenmayer had the Aggies' other two hits. Zimmerman pitched a complete game with three runs allowed on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
DelVal is off tomorrow and will back in action on Tuesday against Washington College at 7 p.m. under the lights.
