DOYLESTOWN (Pa.) -- First-year head coach Joe Nemzer and his staff picked up their first win in the green and gold as the Delaware Valley University women's soccer team held on late to shutout visiting Neumann University, 1-0.
The Aggies (1-1) out-shot the Knights (1-2) 5-2 through the first 30 minutes of play, but didn't cash in until the 40th minute when junior
Sarah Young blasted one of her, now patented, 30-yard bombs that sailed out of the reach of the keeper and under the crossbar for what would prove to be the game-winner. Young scored two goals in similar fashion last season, but both of those tallies came off set pieces. Tonight, she got to a loose ball and stepped right into it, no hesitation.
DelVal had another opportunity late in the first half when
Alyssa Gibson got behind the defense and got a shot on cage that was turned away to keep the score 1-0 at the break.
In the second half, Young nearly did it again as she let another shot go from long range that tipped the keeper's finger, hit the post, and stayed out of the net in the 54th minute. From there, Neumann controlled play for much of the second half, as it got off 11 shots, four on target, that were all managed with relative easy by the Aggies keeper,
Haley Young. The defense did well to shut the door down the stretch and preserve the first win under their new regime.
The Knights totaled six shots on goal to four for DelVal, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Aggies will look to make it two in a row when they travel to Muhlenberg College on Saturday for a 4 p.m. start.
