DELAWARE VALLEY (PA) -- Stevenson University notched a goal early in the second half for a 1-0 triumph over host Delaware Valley University in a non-conference match-up at James Work Stadium on Monday afternoon.
The Mustangs advanced to the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Commonwealth semifinals a year ago, and moved to 4-2-2 for the 2019 campaign with today's win while the Aggies fell to 3-4-1.
Stevenson applied all of the pressure in the first half but neither team managed to find the back of the net. DelVal was outshot 8-0 through the first 45, but freshman
Shay McAnee stopped everything that made its way on goal, keeping the score at 0-0 headed into the break. The Mustangs also had two of the three corner opportunities in the first half.
In the 47
th minute of play, Stevenson's leading goal scorer Jay Smith perfectly redirected a pass by Chris Gonzales into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. DelVal tried its best to tie up the game with four shots in the second half, including a prime opportunity for
Matt Miller midway through the frame from in tight. Miller fired the ball just under the middle of the cross bar but Stevenson's goalkeeper Matt Stellitano managed to get the tips of his fingers on the ball deflecting it off the cross bar and out of play.
The Mustangs outshot DelVal, 18-4 and had eight of the game's 10 corner kicks. Miller and
Nick Gaetano had the only shots on goal for the Aggies, and
McAnee kept his team in the game with four saves.
DelVal will travel to Radnor, Pa. for a non-conference game on Wednesday, September 25 at 7:00 p.m. versus the Cabrini Cavaliers.
